Hike It! Family Fun in the Great Outdoors

There are few family experiences that match the fun and satisfaction of a perfect hike. Hitting the trail allows families to get out of the TV room and into the great outdoors, and proves that exercise and fun are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Still, one of the secrets to a truly great family hike is proper planning. By taking just a few steps at home, hikers can ensure their time on the trail will be perfect for everyone involved.

Before making any decisions about the location or duration of an outdoor expedition, a few key factors have to be accounted for. First and foremost on the list is evaluating the age, capability and physical prowess of the aspiring hikers. Some families may be ready for a grueling mountain voyage, but for most, and especially those with small children, the optimal hike strikes a more peaceful balance between natural beauty and casual difficulty.

Fortunately, the internet is full of sites devoted to helping individuals and groups locate hikes and trails that are the perfect fit. ThisHikingTrail even catalogs physical characteristics of different hikes, allowing users looking for a particular experience to find the perfect hike for them, be it one with a view of the ocean, waterfalls, or national forests.

Once a location is selected, families looking to hike together should check the 10-day weather forecast for the location they want to hike in. If wet weather is not an issue, the forecast is relatively unimportant, but families looking to stay dry should plan ahead, and also accept that Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the weather report. Early morning is an ideal time to take a hike, as the sun is out, but not at its scorching mid-day peak, and there are fewer cars on the road and hikers on the trail.

The last, and arguably most important, detail to settle on before actually hitting the trail is the issue of clothing. Outdoors enthusiasts will know that while nature may be readily available free of charge, the clothes necessary to optimize the outdoor experience are anything but. Hikers will want clothes in multiple layers that can be peeled off or put on according to the weather and time of day. Hikers will also want to steer clear of cotton as much as possible, as cotton retains moisture, meaning hikers wearing cotton clothing who encounter water will likely stay wet for the duration of their adventure.

There are several good ways to find quality outdoor gear without breaking the bank. One very good option is to buy used; resale shops and thrift stores see a large amount of outdoor clothing and equipment come in, often from owners getting rid of gear they never or rarely used. Yard sales can also be a great place to buy outdoor supplies, and add the additional perk of letting consumers haggle for their gear. Finally, the internet has a plethora of sites offering deals on outdoor equipment. SteepAndCheap.com, for example, posts deals on gear for as long as it takes for the sale items to sell out, allowing customers to frequently save of 50% or more on high-quality gear to outfit any hiking expedition.

Fortunately, the best step of preparing the perfect hike is the final one: once all the hiking gear has been acquired, all the logistics ironed out, and all the sunscreen applied, there is nothing left to do but actually get into the great outdoors and hike. With most endeavors, the more care is put into the preparation, the better the final product will be, and preparing for a hike is no different. With a little luck and planning, a family can take to the trail for a wonderful group experience.

After all the delays in construction causing a postponement to our original estimated move in date back in December…

We are happy to finally report that all the necessary renovations have been completed and we are scheduled to have our x-ray unit disassembled, moved, reassembled, and re-calibrated Thursday and then have all our equipment and supplies packed up, moved, and set back up over this coming weekend and will be ready to serve you and your family at our new location:

1 Brookfield Glen Drive, Suite B, Belvidere, NJ 07823.

An Ambulance Down in the Valley

I came across this poem written in 1895 by Joseph Malens, entitled: An Ambulance Down in the Valley and thought you and my many loyal readers would really enjoy it.

‘Twas a dangerous cliff, as they freely confessed,
Though to walk near its crest was so pleasant;
But over its terrible edge there had slipped
A duke and full many a peasant.

So the people said something would have to be done,
But their projects did not at all tally;
Some said, “Put a fence ’round the edge of the cliff,”
Some, “An ambulance down in the valley.”

But the cry for the ambulance carried the day,
For it spread through the neighboring city;
A fence may be useful or not, it is true,
But each heart became full of pity
For those who slipped over the dangerous cliff;
And the dwellers in highway and alley
Gave pounds and gave pence, not to put up a fence,
But an ambulance down in the valley.

“For the cliff is all right, if you’re careful,” they said,
“And, if folks even slip and are dropping,
It isn’t the slipping that hurts them so much
As the shock down below when they’re stopping.”
So day after day, as these mishaps occurred,
Quick forth would those rescuers sally
To pick up the victims who fell off the cliff,
With their ambulance down in the valley.

Then an old sage remarked: “It’s a marvel to me
That people give far more attention
To repairing results than to stopping the cause,
When they’d much better aim at prevention.
Let us stop at its source all this mischief,” cried he,
“Come, neighbors and friends, let us rally;
If the cliff we will fence, we might almost dispense
With the ambulance down in the valley.”

“Oh he’s a fanatic,” the others rejoined,
“Dispense with the ambulance? Never!
He’d dispense with all charities, too, if he could;
No! No! We’ll support them forever.
Aren’t we picking up folks just as fast as they fall?
And shall this man dictate to us? Shall he?
Why should people of sense stop to put up a fence,
While the ambulance works in the valley?”

But the sensible few, who are practical too,
Will not bear with such nonsense much longer;
They believe that prevention is better than cure,
And their party will soon be the stronger.
Encourage them then, with your purse, voice, and pen,
And while other philanthropists dally,
They will scorn all pretense, and put up a stout fence
On the cliff that hangs over the valley.

Better guide well the young than reclaim them when old,
For the voice of true wisdom is calling.
“To rescue the fallen is good, but ’tis best
To prevent other people from falling.”
Better close up the source of temptation and crime
Than deliver from dungeon or galley;
Better put a strong fence ’round the top of the cliff
Than an ambulance down in the valley.

It’s point, I trust, is obviously clear to you that: prevention is always your best option.

Yet, well over a hundred years later, most of us in our modern society today are still depending on the ‘ambulance down in the valley’ of the medical model of sickness, symptom, and disease care. Yet, despite all the research and advances in the modern healthcare system, most of us still continually suffer and eventually die from chronic diseases such as; heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

However, it’s a well known fact that these and most other diseases that plague our modern society today can all be prevented simply by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle.

We Are Moving Updated

Back in the beginning of this past December we posted an announcement that We Were Moving. Followed soon after by this Update that stated that because of construction delays the estimated move in date was postponed.

Since then we’ve been constantly asked when the new date will be.

Well we just heard from the contractor that the landlord hired and he said he’s estimating another 4 weeks to complete all the necessary renovations.

Then we have to have our x-ray unit disassembled, moved, reassembled, and re-calibrated and have all our equipment and supplies moved.

We are estimating to be moved to the new location at 1 Brookfield Glen Drive, Suite B, Belvidere, NJ 07823 some time in the beginning of March 2012.

Until then we will continue to be of service to the surrounding communities at our current location and are very excited to see you and your family at the new location in March 2012.

We Are Moving Update

Having been truly blessed and thankful to be a service here in Belvidere the county seat of Warren county New Jersey and the surrounding communities of: White Township, Hope, Blairstown, Oxford, Columbia, Delaware, Harmony, and Phillipsburg; as well as, the neighboring communities such as: Bangor, Upper and Lower Mt. Bethel in Northampton county Pennsylvania at our current location for the past 9 years, we have simply outgrown our current space.

We realize that the best thing for our current and future patients is a much larger office with ample parking and one that is more handicap accessible.

Our new address will be: 1 Brookfield Glen Drive, Suite B, Belvidere, NJ 07823. Located across the road from Mackey’s Orchard on route 519 at the entrance of Brookfield right across from the Chelsea (only about 3 miles away from our current location).

We are excited to see you and your family in our new location after our estimated move in on:

Why I Don’t Believe in Chiropractic

When I’m not at Belvidere Chiropractic Center helping patients and I’m out and about with my family and I happen to meet someone for the first time, after being asked the proverbial, “So, what do you do?” my answer of course is, “I’m a chiropractor.” At which point in time, I either get, “That’s wonderful, I’m a big believer in chiropractic” or the complete opposite statement, “I don’t believe in chiropractic.”

I find it really hard to respond to either statement since both really don’t make any sense since, to ‘believe’ according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary is: “To have a firm religious faith” and that the definition of religious is: “Relating to or manifesting faithful devotion to a deity”.

Yet, the definition of chiropractic by Dr. Virgil V. Strang author of Essential Principles of Chiropractic states: “Chiropractic is that clinical science that is based upon a law of biology that states that inborn into all living things is the ability to be well. It draws on the fundamental law of physiology stating that the nervous system (consisting of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and special sensory organs) controls and co-ordinates all other organs and structures in the body and relates it to its environment.”

So, since chiropractic is a “clinical science based on the fundamental laws of biology, anatomy, and physiology” therefore; belief, religion, and/or faith don’t factor logically into the equation.

So that’s why I don’t ‘believe’ in chiropractic I know it to be true since I get to see these fundamental laws of biology and physiology at work everyday, day after day after day, with predictability and reproducibility and that is by definition what scientific is.

For the past two years now I’ve been active on social media sites such as: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube and through these social media sites I have had the opportunity and pleasure to connect with some really amazing people.

One such person is Michael Andreano who works with local business owners here in the Lehigh Valley on social media. Watching the local community and the world communicate online, the thing that really caught his attention is its powerful use in helping charities and the local communities.

Michael Andreano has always been a person who believes in giving back and because he himself is truly blessed to have three healthy children, what motivates him is to try and help others have the same and is now teaming up with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in a campaign to help raise money to find a cure and put an end to the debilitating effects that leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma can have on those who suffer from these blood diseases.

In fact, incidences of lymphoma are on the rise, leukemia causes more deaths among children than any other cancer, and is still one of the leading causes of death by disease of children in our country.

We have to keep working to find a cure, but we need your help.
