Healthy Aging Month part 1 – It’s Never Too Late to Get Started on the Road to Better Health

healthyaging1September is Healthy Aging® Month: It’s Never Too Late to Get Started on the Road to Better Health.

September is Healthy Aging® Month an annual health observance month designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. In an effort to draw attention to the needs of the growing numbers of older adults, the month of September was chosen as this is a time when many people think about getting started on new tasks after the summer.

Drawing on the “back to school” urge embedded in everyone from childhood, the monthly activities are designed to encourage people to rejuvenate and get going on positive health measures.

These measures include physical, social, financial and mental wellness.

The month, created by Educational Television Network over 10 years ago, is part of the Healthy Aging® Campaign, a national, ongoing health promotion designed to broaden awareness of the positive aspects of aging and to provide inspiration for adults, ages 50-plus, to improve their physical, mental, social and financial health.

According to Carolyn Worthington, ETNET president, “we saw a need to draw attention to the ‘myths’ of aging, to shout out – ‘hey, it’s not too late to take control of your health, it’s never too late to get started on something new.’ Why not think about the positive aspects of aging instead of the stereotypes and the negative aspects?”

So What Can You Start Doing For This September’s Healthy Aging® Month?

Here are some ideas:

1. Mental Wellness Tip: Now matter what your age, you probably still get that “go back to school” feeling every September. So do it! Take a course and change your life.

2. Social Wellness Tip: No man is an island — improve your mental wellness right now by picking up the phone and calling one person each day this week and making a “date” to get together. Far too often we let friends slip away when all it takes is just a phone call or an email!

3. Physical Fitness Tip: Get started on a walking program -TODAY. Walk for 30 to 45 minutes every day. Can’t get started? Go back to point 2 above … call a friend for a walking partner.

4. Financial Wellness Tip: September is the perfect time to create a holiday budget. In the calm before the storm, make a budget plan for what you will spend over the holidays and STICK to it. Remember it’s the thought that counts more than anything.
